How to remove the “Also on” link from a Facebook Page

Facebook page Also on feature

The "Also on" feature as seen on a Facebook business page

Did you notice a new feature on your Facebook fan page called “Also on?”  It has been called the “around the web” feature because it shows where your company is also listed on other websites — well, those websites that have partnered with Facebook, anyway.  They’re listings of your company on websites like Yelp, where customers can comment on or review your services.

If you haven’t noticed it, you should check the left column of your page just below the “Likes” section.  Not all pages will have them, usually only those with a physical location although that may not always be the case.

Businesses might not want to display these “Also on” links on their fan page for a variety of reasons.  For example:

  • you don’t want to promote another website
  • you don’t like the reviews of your company there
  • you prefer to have all of your customer reviews in one place, and that place happens to be something other than the partner website shown
  • you don’t control the profile or the branding of your company within it

Fortunately you can easily remove this “Also on” feature from your Facebook fan page.  Here’s how to do it:

  1. Click “Edit Page” in the upper right of the screen, below the “Account” menu
  2. Click “Basic Information” menu on the left of the page
  3. In the Widgets section, unselect the box labeled “Links to other places on the web
  4. Save changes and view the page to confirm it has been removed

What do you think of this “Also on” feature?  Is it useful to you?

How to view page source in the new version of FireFox (v6.0)

Viewing a website’s page source is a great SEO hack that helps you figure out how your competitors’ websites are ranking well in search engines.  It shows you the meta data (title, keywords and description) of a given web page (among other things).  This information can give you the inspiration you need to make your site’s pages rank higher.

So how do you view the page source in the new Firefox?

To access the page source code in most browsers (including Firefox up until version 5.0), all you do is select “Page Source” from the “View” menu.  But with the new release of Mozilla’s Firefox version 6.0, the view source option is gone from that location.  Now you must select Tools / Web Developer / Page Source (or Alt – T – W – O in Windows).

Have you looked at your competitors’ page source? How did you use it to improve your own site’s SEO?  Share your tricks in the comments below.

Social Media Marketing: Where to Begin?

Social media marketing is much more than just setting up a Twitter or Facebook account.  It takes thoughtful analysis, strategy, great content development and a little trial and error.  Most of all, it requires patience and skill.

If you jump into social media too fast and without strategy, you run the real risk of turning off current and future customers.

So how do you effectively use social media to grow your business?  Think about your ideal customer. Clearly define that customer’s characteristics and information needs.  Develop content your customer would enjoy (without including a sales pitch).  Share that content through your social networks, then engage.
